Have you been wondering about drop in bathroom sinks and what’s the difference between them and their undermount counterparts? The two functions basically the same way; both are small implement that can direct used water down to the plumbing pipes. The main difference between the two is the way they are installed. A drop in sink has a rim that is directly attached to the countertop. An undermount sink is installed from below the counter thus has no rim visible. Each type has its own points so you need to make sure to get one that works best for you.
According to one source there are at least 10 types of drop in bathroom sinks and they are available in a great range of materials (from granite to porcelain to stainless steel). This fact eventually leads to you finding it confusing to determine which is which. As the sink is virtually hooked to the countertop, the weight of the entire thing is carried by the rim. Secure placement may be further ensured with the use of clamps. There are sinks in this style that come with holes for mounting faucets and there are those that don’t (the faucets are mounted directly on the countertop).
For a long period of time, drop in bathroom sinks were the king of sinks. In fact, drop in sinks are preferable even after the undermount sinks entered the competition. At the beginning of their introduction, undermount sinks were costlier than the drop-in and it took a great deal of efforts to install an undermount type of sink. But today, years after, undermount sinks are just as convenient to install as their drop-in counterparts and their price also becomes somewhat more affordable. Undermount sinks are better if you wish for more work surface on the countertop yet they come with a gap between the rim and the countertop, wherein water may accumulate.
